The Court of Final Appeal handed down its judgments in Ng Hon Lam Edgar (Edgar) & Li Yik Ho (Henry) v Hong Kong Housing Authority and Ng Hon Lam Edgar (Edgar) & Li Yik Ho (Henry) v Secretary for Justice earlier this morning, ruling in favour of the rights of same-sex spouses.
These are landmark victories for same-sex spouses in Hong Kong. They are also a sobering acknowledgment of the discrimination that continues to persist against people on the basis of their sexual orientations. We hope that these cases will encourage the Government to take proactive measures to protect the rights of people of different sexual orientations.
We are grateful to have been able to work with a stellar team for these cases. In particular, we thank Mr. Tim Otty KC, Mr. Jin Pao SC and Mr. Azan Marwah for their incredible work and their strong and powerful advocacy in this case. We will strive to continue protecting and advocating the rights of people regardless of their sexual orientation.
